Update 7:15 p.m.: According to the West Penn Power website electricity service has been restored in the State College area.

Almost 1,200 people in State College, Lemont and Houserville are currently without power.

Todd Meyers, West Penn Power spokesperson, says the outage began around 3:30 in the afternoon, though he’s not sure of the cause.

“It might be related to weather and strong winds, or it might just be equipment failure,” Meyers said.

Crews were dispatched shortly after the outage was reported, and are currently working to restore power.

Meyers says crews will “sectionalize the line,” meaning they will isolate the problem and divert power from other sources to some of the customers affected by the outage. Those closest to the outage – near Matilda Avenue in Lemont – will be the last to have their power turned back on.

“Hopefully, most of the impacted customers will have power while we’re making the repairs,” he says.

He’s unsure how long repairs may take, but says that power should be back on to all customers by later this evening.
