The winter storm that hit Centre County on Sunday night into Monday morning will continue to have an impact into Tuesday, with four school districts operating on two-hour delays and one closed.

State College, Bellefonte, Bald Eagle and Penns Valley school districts announced two-hour delays because of anticipated road conditions.

Philipsburg-Osceola Area School District is closed on Tuesday “due to roadways that are still hazardous in some areas,” according to a Facebook post by Hope Fire Company. The district will have a flexible instruction day.

State College Area School District’s message stated that the delay is because of “road conditions from freezing and drifting snow, especially in the outlying areas.” Bellefonte’s message similarly cited “continuing and anticipated poor weather conditions overnight.”

Bald Eagle had a flexible instruction day on Monday, while the other four districts had scheduled days off.

Sunday night’s storm dropped 6.5 inches of snow mixed with sleet on State College, with other recorded storm totals ranging from 4.8 inches in Bellefonte to 7 inches in Port Matilda, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds of 22 miles per hour, with gusts up to 40 miles per hour, are expected overnight, according to AccuWeather. That combined with temperatures in the 20s could lead to freezing of melted snow on roadways, as well as drifting.

“High winds are causing drifting snow and refreezing of wet roads could occur after sundown,” Ferguson Township police wrote on the departments social media accounts on Monday night. “We want to remind residents and travelers to stay vigilant with these changing conditions.”
