Penn State Head Football Coach James Franklin has talked a lot about branding.
And the Penn State brand is becoming more visible by the day — especially at Beaver Stadium.
Last week, workers used a huge crane to install a mammoth Penn State logo on the back of the scoreboard that towers above the north end zone.
On Wednesday, it was deja vu all over again.
Workers began preparations to add a second logo to Beaver Stadium’s exterior. This second logo will be installed on the scoreboard in the south end zone.
The logo, which was laying face down, was hauled upright during a delicate procedure that required two cranes. It took about 15 minutes to pull the logo into the air and set it down facing the stadium. StateCollege.com was there and you can get a sneak peek at the logo in our video below:
It’s hard to exaggerate the logos’ size — they are enormous — measuring 35 feet across, 28 feet high and 18 inches thick. Each weighs approximately 6,500 pounds. (In the video you can see how small people look while standing next to the logo.)
The logos, featuring the popular Penn State “chipmunk,” will be hard to miss. Each is equipped with 1,400 LED lights so they can be illuminated at night.
The installation process is scheduled to wrap up on Tuesday, May 27 when the second logo is hoisted into position. That work could begin as early as 6 a.m.
And it’s not just the logos. Both scoreboards are being renovated. New state-of-the-art Hi-Definition TV screens will be installed by the start of next season. All of this means that Penn State football fans will be treated to some exciting scoreboard changes, inside the stadium and outside too.
