Popularity of drones is soaring among both individuals and professionals, and South Hills School of Business and Technology is launching new efforts for fun and education centered on the unmanned aerial vehicles

South Hills is sponsoring the State College Drone Racers, which was recently approved as a local chapter of MultiGP, the largest amateur drone racing league in the world. MultiGP is an official special interest group of the Academy of Model Aeronautics for first person view (FPV) racing.

“We hope to create a fun and competitive environment for anyone high school age or older that is interested in drone racing,’ said chapter organizer Serafino Paul Mazza IV. ‘We hope to bring the State College Community together to engage in the sport of the future.”

Anyone interested in learning about the drone racing club can attend an informational session at 7 p.m. on Jan. 10 at South Hills, 480 Waupelani Drive.

The school is also introducing ‘Discovering Drones’ a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) series for teenagers in grades 7 through 12. The curriculum offers 20 hours of hands-on learning using flight simulator software and drone building and flying experience.

Begun in 2017, South Hills will continue to offer its FAA Part 107 Drone Pilot Certification classes.
