Curtis Johnson is entering the national spotlight.

The assistant principal at State College Area High School will start his four-year term Sunday on the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ Board of Directors.

Johnson, who accepted his current post at State High in 2003, currently sits on the board of the Pennsylvania Association of Secondary School Principals.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) is an organization for high school principals and assistant principals across the United States as well as 45 other countries. NASSP is also responsible for the creation of the National Honor Society at the elementary, junior high and high school levels.

Johnson’s new role on the board of this organization will allow him to contribute to the group’s policy agenda on federal education, which aims to give secondary schools and students a voice. Johnson will also travel to the nation’s capitol to meet with other board members, national public figures and federal education policymakers.

According to NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti, Johnson will be ‘giving a firsthand account of the economic situation in his state and school district and the effect that federal education laws and regulations have on his school,’ which she said is especially important with frequent cuts to federal education funds and programs.
