Friday, May 27

Movies

‘POM Wonderful Presents The Greatest Movie Ever Sold,’ a documentary about branding, advertising and product placement that is financed and made possible by brands, advertising and product placement, opens locally this weekend at the College 9 Theatre. Shows today are at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 p.m.

Po joins forces with a group of new kung-fu masters to take on an old enemy with a deadly new weapon in the animated ‘Kung Fu Panda 2,’ in 3D, also at College 9 Theatre.

Theater

Our Lady of Victory Middle School presents ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium at 800 Westerly Parkway.

‘Epic Proportions,’ a live-theater production set in the 1930s, features two brothers who play extras in the epic ‘Exeunt Omnes.’ State College Community Theatre is putting on the show, which will begin at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Boal Barn Playhouse in Boalsburg.

Food

The State College Downtown Farmers Market continues on Locust Lane (across from the HUB lawn) between College Avenue and Beaver Avenue. The market is held Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Most of the fruits and vegetables sold are seasonal. Some of the vendors sell baked goods, canned goods and crafts all season long. All vendors produce or grow what they sell.

Bars and Clubs

Indigo in State College will feature happies from 10 p.m. to midnight, plus Local Motion’s DJ Manik Mike.

Special Events

The Boalsburg Fire Carnival continues through Memorial Day. A complete schedule is available here.

Folk College is a fun and friendly weekend of playing and listening to folk music — three days of workshops, jam sessions, concerts and group playing. The camp is designed for musicians with eclectic tastes, offering a choice of workshops ranging from old-time to Celtic to blues to international, and you’ll get to sing, dance, play and listen. Musicians of all instruments and levels are welcome, and there are also choices for non-musicians who want to listen, learn and experiment with folk music. Each evening features a staff concert followed by staff-led jam sessions. The Folk College opens at 1 p.m. at Juniata College, 1800 Moore St., Huntingdon. Saturday, May 28

Sports

More than 4,000 volleyball players – and a projected 1,000-or-so relatives and friends – will spend Memorial Day weekend at the Happy Volley Club Championships and Camp, now in its fourth year. The event is a tournament and camp for the participants, with 57 courts set up at eight venues – including the Bryce Jordan Center, Rec Hall, the White Building, Holuba Hall and the Multi-Sport Facility. Matches are open to the public and are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, with play-offs set for Monday. The official event website is herehere.

Special Events

‘A Taste of Penns Valley,’ from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Millheim Community Pool, will feature delicious food from Penns Valley restaurants, civic groups and churches and music from local bands. The all-you-care-to-eat event benefits the Penns Valley Hope Fund. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $5 for kids 5 to 12, and children under 5 eat free. Find more information here.

American and German WWII re-enactors will bivouac on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg for ‘World War II Revisited,’ Saturday and Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. each day. A small squad tactical demonstration against German opposition is scheduled for 1 p.m. each day. And The ‘Andrew Sisters Tribute Show’ will entertain the troops with the dance and comedy reminiscent of the era. Admission to the 3 p.m. Saturday show is free. Find more information here.

Splashdown

The renewed William L. Welch Community Swimming Pool will open at 11:30 a.m. Saturday with a 30-minute ceremony. The Welch and Park Forest pools will open with free admission from noon to 8 p.m. More information can be found here.

Cabaret

State High Thespians will hold their annual ‘Cabaret’ on Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m. in the State College High School North Building Auditorium. Tickets cost $10. This year’s Cabaret features songs from ‘Annie’, ‘Aladdin’, ‘Hairspray’ and other great shows. A reception featuring appetizers and desserts, a silent auction, raffle and sale will be held during intermission.

Sunday, May 23

Ongoing Events

The Happy Volley Club Championships and Camp at Penn State, the Boalsburg Fire Carnival and Folk College in Huntingdon continue.

Film

‘Kill the Irishman,’ based on the real story of mobster Danny Greene, continues its run in The State Theatre’s Friedman Auditorium at 4 and 7 p.m. Ray Stevenson, Christoper Walken and Val Kilmer star.

Memorial Day Events

Happy Valley commemorates Memorial Day in Boalsburg, the holiday’s birthplace, and elsewhere. Events include a Memorial Day Run beginning at 8:30 a.m., ‘We Will Remember: A Tribute to Veterans,’ at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Boal Barn Playhouse, The Allegheny Mountain Region A.A.C.A.
