Friday, Sept. 30

Movies 

In ‘Moneyball’ — starring, in part, Brad Pitt — the manager of the Oakland As pulls together a ball team on a budget, with help from computer-generated analysis. It’s playing this weekend at the College 9 Theatre and the UEC 12 Theater. 

 ’50/50′ offers a comedic account of a 27-year-old’s cancer diagnosis — and his struggle to beat back the disease. The film is showing at  the UEC 12 Theater.

Starting Friday, the State Theatre will host the Workers of the World Film Festival. Put on by the Penn State Institute for the Arts and Humanities, the festival will spotlight 16 films that explore the world of work, from West Virginia coal mines to Tokyo noodle shops.

Performing Arts

Renowned jazz singer Gretchen Parlato will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Penn State’s Schwab Auditorium. Shuttle service from the Eisenhower Parking Deck will be available.

Food 

 The State College Downtown Farmers Market continues on Locust Lane (across from the HUB lawn) between College Avenue and Beaver Avenue. The market is held Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Most of the fruits and vegetables sold are seasonal. Some of the vendors sell baked goods, canned goods and crafts all season long. All vendors produce or grow what they sell.

Sports

The Penn State women’s volleyball team will take on Wisconsin at 7 p.m. at Rec Hall.

Bars and Clubs

At Otto’s Pub and Brewery in State College, the Sveltones will play starting about 10 p.m.

The Autoport in State College will have happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. Chris Good is scheduled to play at 8 p.m. 

At Bar Bleu in State College, happy hour will run from 9 to 11 p.m. Lowjack will play starting at 10:30 p.m.

In Toftrees, the Down Under Steakhouse will host happy hour from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Rusty will play at 8 p.m. And at the Gingerbread Man in State College, DJ Boner will entertain starting at 10 p.m.; happy hour will run from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Saturday, Oct. 1

Community Events

The 12th annual Downtown State College Fall Festival is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hayrides, pumpkin-carving, pony rides, a community-resources fair, a dessert competition and other attractions are planned. Earlier in the morning, borough officials will host a dedication ceremony for Mayor Welch Plaza and a celebration of the borough’s domestic-partner registry. Starting at 9 a.m., Otto’s Pub and Brewery will host the Fall Fest Brewery Collectibles Show. Collectors from several states will be on hand to display, buy, sell and trade collectibles from breweries past and present.

The State College Walk to End Alzheimer’s is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Pennsylvania Military Museum grounds in Boalsburg.

Sports

The Penn State football team will take on Indiana in Bloomington. The game is slated for a noon kick-off and will be carried by ESPNU. The State College Area Rollers will host a Fall Brawl at Penn Skates, 2210 High Tech Drive. The doors will open at 5 p.m.

The Penn State field-hockey team will play Northwestern at noon at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.

The Penn State women’s volleyball team will play Minnesota at 6 p.m. at Rec Hall.

The Penn State men’s soccer team will play Michigan at 7 p.m. at Jeffrey Field.

Sunday, Oct. 2

Community Events

The State College Jaycees and Centre Region Parks and Recreation will host a Punt, Pass and Kick competition. It’s scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at Holuba Hall.

Hot Peas ‘n Butter, a children’s-music group, will play at Eisenhower Auditorium at 2 p.m.

Celebrate the Harvest, a reception of local cuisine paired with a presentation about the Centre County Farmland Trust, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Elk Creek Cafe and Aleworks, in Millheim.
