Happy Friday, Happy Valley!

With an expected break in the rain of the past week, it’s a great weekend to get out and enjoy summer around the area. The Millheim Ramble, FarmFest, Last Cruise, Flutopia 5k, a Movie on the Mountain and the Pleasant Gap Fire Company Carnival are just a few of the things to check out.

A lot more is happening, too, and we’ve picked out some of the weekends highlights below.

FRIDAY

Pleasant Gap Fire Company Carnival
A summer tradition, the Pleasant Gap Fire Company Carnival continues Friday and Saturday with food, rides, games and live entertainment at 475 Robinson Lane, Pleasant Gap. Velveeta takes from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Hybrid Ice plays at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Chicken barbecue at 4 p.m. and food stands open at 6 p.m. each night. 

Movie on the Mountain
Enjoy a romantic movie under the stars as the weekly summer Movies on the Mountain at Tussey Mountain presents ‘The Notebook. Admission is free. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. and the movie starts at dusk. Popcorn and candy will be available, as well as hot dogs, and other great food you won’t find at regular movie theaters. Soda, beer, and other beverages also are offered. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and watch a the movie under the stars.

Concert on the Village Green
Lemont Village Association’s summer Friday night concert series continues from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the Village Green with the bluegrass sounds of the Tussey Mountain Moonshiners. Brazilian Munchies food truck will be on hand. Bringing chairs or blankets is recommended.

‘Lend Me a Tenor’
Nittany Theatre at the Barn’s summer season continues with the Tony-winning Ken Ludwig comedy ‘Lend Me a Tenor.’ Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday

‘Four Weddings and an Elvis’
The Playhouse at McConnellstown, 11680 Raystown Road in Huntingdon, presents this high-rolling comedy that  tells the story of Sandy, the four-times-married-three-times-divorced owner of a Las Vegas wedding chapel. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.


SATURDAY

Flutopia 5k
The area’s most musical 5k, Flutopia 5k is back for its final year, starting at 8 a.m. at Tudek Park. Racers, joggers and walkers will make their way through the scenic Tudek grounds while being serenaded by a variety of local musicians. The 5k benefits Centre Volunteers in Medicine and Doctors Without Borders. Day of race registration will be from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. All prizes are music-themed, and there will be a Flutastic 50 yard dash for children 10 and under.

FarmFest
From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Grange Park in Centre Hall, the 7th annual Pennsylvania Organic FarmFest offers a full day of family activities, live entertainment, local food and craft vendors, demos and a chance to learn about the area’s agriculture and farmers. Millheim Ramble
When Karoondinha was called off last summer, Elk Creek Cafe & Aleworks stepped in with an impromptu music festival. Now, the Millheim Ramble looks to become a summer tradition. From 1 to 8 p.m. on the Millheim Fire Company grounds, enjoy craft beer, local food and live music from Mulebone, Ted McCloskey and the HiFi’s, Pure Cane Sugar, Eric Ian Farmer and The Crooked Line. Pennharmonics Reunion Concert
Alumni of Penn State’s Pennharmonics will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the a cappella group with a free performance of classic pop and rock favorites at 4:30 p.m. in 102 Forum, University Park. They’ll be joined by special guest Rama-Lama. Admission is free.

 


 

SUNDAY

Snow Shoe Mud Race
The second of three mud races this summer at the Snow Shoe Fire Company Mud Race Track, 256 Rusnak Hill Rd, Clarence, gets started at noon. After this past week, the track should be good and ready. For participants, registration ($25) is 8 to 11:30 a.m. For spectators, tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6 to 12, and $15 for pits.

Last Cruise
The annual “best of the best” car show on Allen Street in downtown State College, the Last Cruise features participants who are invited based on their success in other competitions and the quality of their vehicles. The invitational car show is one of four major fundraising events Centre County Youth Service Bureau holds yearly to raise money for the programs it serves. The day starts with a car show from 1-4 p.m., followed by an award ceremony at 4 p.m. and the cruise around downtown from 4:30-6 p.m.

PBS Kids Summer of Adventure
WPSU presents screenings of favorite PBS Kids shows with the Summer of Adventure series. This week is a new one-hour movie, ‘Splash & Bubbles: Pole to Pole,’ at 2 p.m. at the State Theatre. Admission is free, but registration is required.

Centred Outdoors at Millbrook Marsh
This week’s Centred Outdoors guided adventure starts at 2 p.m. at Millbrook Marsh, where you’ll discover the unique features of the marsh and fen ecosystems. Learn how Native Americans used the site, about its connection to the former Farmer’s High School now known as Penn State, and enjoy wildlife viewing. Guests will have the option to participate in two different walks; a short education focused foray, and a longer jaunt through the trails trading interpretation with mobility. This edition will be held again at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. RSVP and details.

Cruisin’ Classics Presents: ‘Cars’
After the Last Cruise ends, head over to the State Theatre for a showing of the Pixar movie ‘Cars,’ at 6 p.m. Tickets are $7.

South Hills Music Picnic.
South Hills School of Business and Technology, 480 Waupelani Drive, continues its summer concert serieswiththe State College Community Band from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Grounds open at 5 p.m. and visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic, blankets and chairs. Refreshments and light picnic fare also will be available for purchase. 

Summer Sounds from the Gazebo
A seasonal staple in Bellefonte, Summer Sounds from the Gazebo in Talleyrand Park continues with Rama-Lama at 7 p.m. Lawn chairs or blankets are suggested.
