Happy Friday, Happy Valley!

A warm and sunny weekend awaits, and there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. The Spikes have a fireworks night on Friday and Bark in the Park Night on Sunday. Movies on the Mountain returns to Tussey Mountain, with a twist. Centred Outdoors has another guided adventure on tap; Downtown Bellefonte holds its first Chalk the Walk fundraiser; and an American Pop-Up celebration brings food, beer, games and music to Millheim.

Plus, you’ll find free outdoor concerts in Lemont, State College and Bellefonte.

You can also get inside with Nittany Theatre at the Barn or jazz and PBS Kids special event at the State Theatre.

FRIDAY

The Little Mermaid
Join the elementary division of Singing Onstage at noon in Schlow Library’s Downsbrough Community Room as they celebrate the story of Ariel and her friends in the sea while singing beloved songs from the animated film.

Global Connections: Honoring Life in Various Cultures
Global Connections and Learning to Live: What’s Your Story? in collaboration with the PSU Counselor Education Program, will be host a panel discussion and Q&A session focusing about beliefs, customs, rituals and practices around dying and death in Sri Lanka, China, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Spikes vs. Crosscutters
The State College Spikes host the Williamsport Crosscutters at 7:05 p.m. at Medlar Field. It’s Bellies and Baseball Night with the Pregnancy Resource Clinic and the first 1,000 fans receive a travel mug. Kids can run the bases after every weekend home game. And it’s another post-game fireworks night. The next fireworks night will be on Tuesday, July 3.

Concert on the Village Green
Lemont Village Association’s summer Friday night concert series continues with Steve Van Hook and Jim Colbert playing indie folk rock from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the Village Green. Brazilian Munchies food truck will be on hand as well.

Importance of Being Earnest
Nittany Theatre at the Barn’s summer season continues with the most renowned of Oscar Wilde’s comedies, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Boal Barn Playhouse in Boalsburg.

Movies (and Poochies) on the Mountain
Movies on the Mountain at Tussey Mountain returns for the summer with ‘The Fox and the Hound’ for the first, dog-friendly Poochies on the Mountain. Guests bringing their four-legged friends are asked to observe all rules on site. [Details here.]

Admission is free. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. and the movie starts at dusk. Popcorn and candy will be available, as well as hot dogs, and other great food you won’t find at regular movie theaters. Soda, beer, and other beverages also are offered. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and watch a the movie under the stars.

Jazz in the Attic
Kirk Reese, a 30-year veteran the Pennsylvania jazz scene, brings his longstanding trio with bassist Steve Meashey and drummer Kirk Stabley, to the State Theatre as part of the Jazz in the Attic series at 8 p.m.

 


 

SATURDAY

Lights, Camera, Action!
Join Schlow Library’s Children’s Department for a behind-the-scenes tour of the State Theatre at 10 a.m.

Author Reading at the All-Sports Museum
Penn State Bookstore in partnership with the Penn State All-Sports Museum will host a reading with Denise Kaminsky, author of the Nittany Lion children’s books series. The readings will be in the lobby of the museum at 10 a.m., followed by a fun Nittany Lion mask craft. Free and open to the community.

Animals in the Arts
It’s the last day to check out a special Atrium exhibit at the Gallery Shop, 824 Pike Street in Lemont. Two and three-dimensional media, with paintings, photographs and clay, celebrate a menagerie of domestic and wild animals. Shop hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday Stories Alive
Schlow Library’s Children’s Department hosts a weekly half-hour of stories, fingerplays, and a craft, or movies, or a special performance. Participants should arrive within 15 minutes of the start of the program to join activities. Program starts at 11 a.m.

Food Trucks and Live Music in Bellefonte
The Bellefonte Elks, 120 W.High St., will host food trucks, including Brazilian Munchies, beginning at noon, with live music from Biscuit Jam from 5 to 7 p.m. Take your food inside the Elks, no cover charge, to enjoy air conditioning and a cold drink.

Pontoon Boat Rides
Enjoy a ride on the pontoon boat at Black Moshannon State Park, with rides on the hour from 2 to 7 p.m. First-come, first-served due to limited seats. Riders must be 4 or older. [Details]

Penn’s Woods Music Festival
The annual Penn’s Woods Music Festival summer series continues with the festival orchestra performing selections by Bernstein, Copland, and Dvorák at 7:30 p.m. in Eisenhower Auditorium. Pre-concert conversation with Maestro Edelstein at 6:30 p.m.

 


 

SUNDAY

PBS Kids Summer of Adventure
Join WPSU at the State Theatre at 2 p.m. for PBS Kids Summer of adventure, featuring the new, one-hour movie ‘Nature Cat: Return of Bad Dog Bart.’ Admission is free, but registration is required.

Chalk the Walk
As part of Bellefonte’s First Sunday, the first Chalk the Walk fundraiser to life with colorful artwork created with chalk on High and Allegheny streets from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants can purchase one or more $15 squares to decorate, with a panel judging and prizes for winners at 3 p.m. Proceeds benefit Downtown Bellefonte Inc. Centred Outdoors
Explore Bellefonte’s Talleyrand Park, including the Edible Landscape Garden, Sculpture Garden, and the bridges that cross Spring Creek. Learn the history behind the park’s features, the ongoing restoration of the watershed, and future plans for it. Get a firsthand look at the Waterfront Revitalization Project and visit the ducks, fish, and playground with your kids. This week’s Centred Outdoors is from 2 to 5 p.m. and will be held again on July 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. Register here.

American Celebration Pop-Up
A family picnic-style celebration at 4 p.m. at the Millheim Fire Company grounds will feature food trucks and Elk Creek Cafe barbecue and beer. Enjoy lawn games and live music by the Perkolators. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the fire company.

South Hills Music Picnic
South Hills School of Business and Technology, 480 Waupelani Drive, continues its summer concert serieswith one of State College’s most popular bands, Pure Cane Sugar bringing their soulful, sultry voices and masterful musicianship to the stage. Grounds open at 5 p.m. and visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic, blankets and chairs. Refreshments and light picnic fare also will be available for purchase. 

Spikes vs. Scrappers
The State College Spikes are back at Medlar Field to face Mahoning Valley at 6:05 p.m. Bring your four-legged friends for Bark in the Park Night (check the rules first here), and bring your glove for a pre-game catch on the field at 5 p.m. The first 250 kids 12 and under will receive a voucher for a free hot dog, chips, soda, and one-time play pass in Ike’s Kids Zone.

Summer Sounds from the Gazebo
A seasonal staple in Bellefonte, Summer Sounds from the Gazebo in Talleyrand Park continues with Tussey Mountain Moonshiners performing their bluegrass sounds at 7 p.m. Lawn chairs or blankets are suggested.
