HALLOWEEN GUIDE
Looking for some spooky (and not-so-spooky) fun? The next few days are filled with Halloween parades, trick-or-treat events, parties, train rides and more. For a complete rundown, check out our guide to Halloween-themed events around the area.
FRIDAY
Engineering My World
An hour of hands-on STEM learning with an engineer from 6-7 p.m. at Discovery Space, 1224 N. Atherton St., this program will focus on engineering and is for parents and children ages 6-10 working together. The program and admission to Discovery Space will be free. Call (814) 234-0200 to register.
Art Sympo
Bring an artwork or a project you’re working on to Art Alliance Gallery Downtown, from 6 to 9 p.m., then present, share, discuss and hang it. BYOB. $10 at the door for those sharing a work, and a 50/50 drawing will be held.
Friday Night Live
Centre LGBTQA Support Network presents the monthly Friday Night Live from 7-9 p.m. at Webster’s Bookstore & Cafe, 133 E. Beaver Ave., with Philadelphia-area singer-songwriter Busy Bee, followed by an open mic, with free admission and free food.
State High Football
The Little Lions return to Memorial Field to face Chambersburg at 7 p.m.
Penn State Hockey
The Nittany Lions are back at Pegula Ice Arena for a two-game series against Michigan. Puck drops at 7 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday. Verified resale and SRO tickets available.
The Rocky Horror Show
Love & Light Productions will stage the cult-classic rock musical ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ at 7 and 11 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday at The State Theatre. Individual and group costume contests will be held. Must be 18 or older and ID is required.
You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown
State College Community Theatre will perform ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,’ this weekend at the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center. The musical is based on the ‘Peanuts’ comics by Charles Schulz, with book, music and lyrics by Clark Gesner. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday
Argonautika
Penn State Centre Stage presents ‘Argonautika’ at 7:30 p.m. at the Pavilion Theatre, University Park. Written by Tony Award-winning director Mary Zimmerman, the show is a modern take on the old tale of ‘The Voyage of Jason and the Argonauts.’ Shows continue through Nov. 3.
Straight Outta Philly
Two of Philadelphia’s most spectacular movement companies — Philadanco and Rennie Harris Puremovement — come together to communicate social and political ideas through hip-hop and contemporary dance in Straight Outta Philly, at 7:30 p.m. in Eisenhower Auditorium.
SATURDAY
Pumpkin Festival
Open at 9 a.m., Way Fruit Farm, 2355 Halfmoon Valley Road, Port Matilda, celebrates its final festival of October with a free wagon ride to the pumpkin patch to pick your own pumpkin, make-your-own caramel apple bar, apple pie contest, and more.
Discovery Space Grand Opening
Discovery Space will hold a grand opening for its new location, 1224 N. Atherton St., with a ribbon-cutting at 9:45 a.m. A weekend of free programs also continues from noon to 1 p.m. with ‘Weather Where I Am,’ an hour of hands-on STEM learning with a meteorologist for parents and children ages 6-10 working together. Kids Carnival
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Giant Food Store parking lot, 2222 E. College Avenue, a kids carnival will benefit Healing Patch, which helps children and families with counseling when faced with the loss of a loved one. The day will feature a bounce house, face painting, games, prizes, cotton candy, popcorn, and much more.
Pit Bull Awareness Day
Happy Paws Happy Homes will hold its 10th annual Pit Bull Awareness Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of Petco, 40 Colonnade Way. The event will feature pit bull ambassadors, dog massages and yoga, kids’ activities, giveaway items,vendors and more. . The day aims to dispel myths associated with pit bulls, raise awareness about overpopulation of pit bulls, provide statistics and information advocating against breed-specific legislation, promote responsible pet ownership and provide opportunities to foster or adopt a local pit bull. Leashed, altered, dog-friendly, kid-friendly dogs are welcome.
Pennsylvania Military Museum Tour
Go ‘Inside the Belly of the Beast’ with a private tour of the Pennsylvania Military Museum. Museum educators will lead a look behind-the-curtain of how the museum operates and its history. Tour will include the gallery space, collections and holdings, historical vehicle building and staff only areas. Tour begins in the museum theater at 2 p.m. Seating is limited and reservations are required by emailing pmmfriendsbusmgr@gmail.com. The tour lasts two hours and admission is $15 ($5 with museum membership).
Penn State Women’s Hockey
The Nittany Lion women’s ice hockey team takes the ice at 2 p.m. at Pegula Ice Arena to open a two-game set against Robert Morris. The teams face off again on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Kacy & Clayton at Elk Creek Cafe
On the heels of their acclaimed new album, ‘The Siren’s Song,’ and spending the summer touring as opening act for Wilco, folk duo Kacy & Clayton play at 8 p.m. at Elk Creek Cafe, 100 W. Main St. in Millheim.
SUNDAY
Homebrew Sunday
Join The Barn at Lemont from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to learn more about brewing at their regular Sunday series. This week they’re experimenting with seasonal ingredients with a Sun-Dried Tomato Dark Strong — sweet and earthy brew that should blend perfectly with their Flander’s golden ale yeast strain. Help brew a unique beer and bottle last month’s experimental Milkshake IPA.
Penn State Field Hockey – Big Ten Tourney
The Penn State field hockey team, ranked No. 5 in the nation, will open Big Ten Tournament play at home, taking on Iowa at noon.
Penn State Men’s Soccer
The Nittany Lion men’s soccer team closes out the regular season with a noon game against Northwestern at Jeffrey Field.
Lady Lion Basketball
The Penn State women’s basketball team sees its first game action of 2017-18 with a 2 p.m. exhibition against Cedarville at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Water Quality in My Community

Penn State Concert Choir
The Penn State Concert Choir presents its fall concert, joined by the State College Area High School Mastersingers and organist William Neill, at 4 p.m. in the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center Worship Hall. The choirs will perform a set of compositions individually to begin the program, and then will combine in a performance of ‘Requiem’ by French composer Maurice Duruflé, accompanied by organ. General admission is $4.99 and for students $2, at the door.
Roller Derby
State College Area Roller Derby‘s Happy Valley Dolls will take on the Dolls of Destruction at 5 p.m. at Penn Skates, 2210 High Tech Road. Admission is free for children 10 and under. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.
Anders Osborne and Jackie Greene
Singer-songwriters Anders Osborne and Jackie Greene will bring their tour to the State Theatre, where they’ll perform together in an 8 p.m. show. They’ll be joined by Cris Jacobs.
