There was an explosion at the State College Area High School on Thursday, but everything was under control.
Construction crews were at the State High south building to get the renovations started with a bang — literally. The first phase of construction involves the installation of underground utilities, but some underground rock was getting in the way. So they blew it up!
A series of controlled blasts were set up on the State High campus, quickly detonating and sending an explosive force downward into the rock. Almost immediately afterwards, excavators began moving the rocks out of the way.
Crews expect to do several more controlled explosions over the course of the summer, depending on how much additional rock they have to contend with.
