Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips, Chilly Temperatures Expected

It’s trick-or-treat night tonight in State College and the Centre Region!

The Halloween tradition officially starts at 6 and runs until 8 p.m. for the State College borough, as well as College, Ferguson, Harris and Patton townships. Halfmoon Township’s trick-or-treating fun will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

This can be a fun time for the young and young-at-heart, but make sure you follow these safety tips so your Halloween is a treat and not a trick.

The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends wearing flame resistant costumes. The costume’s label should say it is flame resistant. Candlelit jack-o’-lanterns should be kept off of porches and away from loose fitting costumes.

Anytime there are groups of people walking the streets at dusk, it raises concerns for pedestrian safety. Make sure children use the sidewalk and stay out of the street as they walk – not run – from house to house. Only visit houses with lit porch lights and residents you know and trust. The CPCSC also advises following all posted traffic signals and walk signs.

Comfortable shoes are best, as are costumes without long capes or gowns to trip on. Carrying a flashlight and using reflective tape to trim the edges of costumes or candy sacks is also encouraged. The CPCSC also notes that masks should not restrict a child’s breathing or field of vision.

When all is said and done, have an adult thoroughly inspect the trick-or-treat spoils before digging in – especially for suspicious or homemade treats.

Accuweather meteorologist Tom Kines says the night is going to be clear and cool for State College, so make sure your costume is warm. Temperatures this evening are expected to be in mid-40s with no wind or precipitation to ruin the trick-or-treating fun.
