The Asylum, Penn State’s Club for Underground Music, brought an alternative style of music to the HUB-Alumni Hall Sunday night.
I Am Alaska and Rocket Story Hero took the stage first. After winning Asylum’s Battle of the Bands, the two local bands were given the opportunity to open for Asylum’s Spring Concert.
Polar Bear Club, an indie- rock outfit from Rochester, New York, performed next.
Jimmy Stadt, lead vocalist for Polar Bear Club, said he was very excited to perform at Penn State.
“College shows are really great for us. A), they’re fun. And B), they’re good money. And we love performing with Four Year Strong — love those dudes to death — sometimes it works out good,” Stadt said.
Four Year Strong, a pop-punk band from Massachusetts, took the stage at 9 p.m. The crowd began cheering and screaming as the highly anticipated performance began. Four Year Strong has released three studio albums, including its latest, ‘Enemy of the World.’
Scott Southlea, sophomore secondary education major and secretary of the Asylum, said the club was very excited to bring Four Year Strong to Penn State.
“Four Year Strong is really starting to take off right now, so when we had the option, we definitely wanted to bring them here. A lot of people like them. And they’re different from a lot of other bands that have been coming to Penn State. It’s great for the alternative crowd to see bands they like.”
The Asylum-sponsored concert was a free event and open to the public. Southlea said 350 people picked up presale tickets, and he assumed another 100 people picked up tickets at the door.
