State College Area High School students will return from winter break on Jan. 8, and when they do, they’ll be starting classes in the new south building.

Crews have been working to finish up the new building, and an extended break was built into the school calendar so work could be completed while students were off.

The new construction began in January 2016, and it’s a project that’s been planned for more than a decade. A public referendum to permit borrowing $85 million as part of financing the project passed in May 2014 and final plans were approved in 2015.

The new south building is phase one of a three phase effort that will finish in the summer of 2019. With the new building open, phase two of the project will take place through June, with renovations and additions to the old portions of the south building.

Phase three will take place from June 2018 through July 2019 and will involve demolition of a substantial part of the north building, where new construction will allow the Delta Program to move from Fairmount Avenue Building to the high school campus. Once completed, the two buildings combined will total more than 600,000 square feet.

In a new SCASD video filmed on Dec. 22 and released on Wednesday, Tim Jones, project manager for Massaro CM Services, leads a video tour of the new building set to open on Monday.
