The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting State College area residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

The walk will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in University Park. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be an opportunity for nearly 500 participants in State College to learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. Walk participants will also join in a meaningful ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to the one mile walk, participants will enjoy free coffee drinks and smoothies compliments of the Sheetz truck; organized team photos; special guest speaker, Penn State men’s basketball coach Patrick Chambers; and a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.

“Each year, we are so delighted by the State College community who joins in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” says Gail Roddie-Hamlin, president and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association. “For so many, this walk is personal, and it provides the area an opportunity to show support for their loved ones, friends, neighbors, colleagues and the health of their community. Funds raised will provide care and support services to the 400,000 residents of Pennsylvania living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia, while also contributing to advancing critically needed research.”
