Waste Management Discontinuing Residential Trash Collection in Centre County

Some Centre County households will need to find a new garbage hauler in the coming weeks as Waste Management ends residential trash services in Centre County.

The company plans to end residential trash and recycling collection in Centre County by the end of August, according to a letter recently sent to customers.

A Waste Management spokesperson confirmed to StateCollege.com that the end of service applies to all of its residential customers in Centre County, but did not respond to a question about the reason for the discontinuation.

“After many years of providing residential trash service in the Centre County region, WM has made the difficult decision to discontinue the residential line of service out of our State College Hauling facility,” the spokesperson wrote in an email. “We appreciate the trust our customers have placed in WM and are grateful for the opportunity to have served these communities.”

Customers who contract with Waste Management are responsible for finding a new service. Those who have paid for service beyond the end date will automatically be issued refunds.

In Spring Township, where households are responsible for hiring their own trash collection service, officials wrote in a Facebook post that they did not receive a courtesy notification from Waste Management and only learned of the decision from residents who received the letter.

“…We learned of this change at the same time many of you did,” the township wrote. “We understand this news may be unexpected, and we apologize for any inconvenience or uncertainty it may cause.”

Centre County-based Fred Carson Disposal Service wrote in a Facebook post that it has been “inundated” with calls from Waste Management customers looking to sign up for new service.

“Please be patient we will return phone calls ASAP,” the company wrote. “We will get you signed up and services started before your current service ends.”

The change affects only residential customers who individually contract with Waste Management as their hauler. Those who use other private haulers or have municipally-operated or contracted service are not affected.

State College and Bellefonte operate their own trash collection, while Benner, College, Ferguson, Harris and Patton townships jointly contract with Burgmeier’s Hauling Inc. for residential collection. Waste Management was previously contracted hauler for those townships until Burgmeier’s won the new contract that began in 2025.
