There’s a new sheriff in town. The University has named Regis Becker its first Director of Ethics and Compliance. Becker will make sure the university complies with all federal, state, and local laws, as well as internal policies. He also has the task of developing Penn State’s “first comprehensive program of institutional ethics.” Furthermore, Dr. Becker will need to pinpoint any areas of ethical risks or vulnerabilities.

“Regis Becker’s range of distinguished experience in corporate compliance, security and law enforcement makes him the ideal person to implement and oversee clear, comprehensive and exemplary principles and procedures for the University,” President Rod Erickson said in a news release.

The Director will answer to the Legal and Compliance Committee of the Board of Trustees, in addition to the Senior Vice President for Finance and Business, a position once held by Gary Schultz.

An alumnus of Penn State University, Becker is currently a corporate compliance office at PPG Industries in Pittsburgh, and was once a special agent for the FBI.

“I believe my capabilities will serve Penn State well as it works to strengthen its overall institutional commitment to integrity and transparency,” Becker said. “The experience I have gained throughout my career provides me with a broad practical perspective and an in-depth understanding of the critical role that a robust ethics and compliance program can play in bolstering and sustaining an organization’s culture and values. I look forward to continuing my work as a compliance leader in service to this great institution.”

The announcement came eight months after President Rodney Erickson unveiled the position’s search committee. The Board of Trustees created the position following the January 2012 preliminary recommendations of Louis Freeh. Strangely, the news release announcing the acquisition of Regis Becker does not mention Freeh’s connection to this office.
