Winds & Snow to Drop Off As Temperatures Begin to Improve

After a string of bitter winter days, State College might finally be catching a break.

On Saturday, at least five inches of snow was supposed to hit the area, but Accuweather meteorologist Tom Kines says we got lucky. The southern part of the state got walloped with six or more inches, but State College only saw about an inch and a half throughout the day.

And that’s not the only good news. After a week of awful temperatures and even worse wind chills, temperatures might finally start to sneak back up.

“I’m pretty sure you’d have to go back to around January of 1994 to find a week as cold as the one we just had,” Kines says. “…but we have a legitimate chance to get above freezing on Sunday. At this point, it might feel like a spring day.”

While temperatures Sunday will hover in high 20’s or even the low 30’s, things will drop back off again Sunday night. Temperatures will plummet below zero once again after the sun sets.

Kines says the overnight temperatures could freeze anything that melts on Sunday, potentially creating some slick spots on the roads Monday morning.

Monday will be a low point for the week, which a predicted high of about 12 degrees. On Monday night, Kines expects temperatures will drop off below zero once again.

“The positive side of this cold that’s coming in tomorrow is that it won’t be accompanied by the high winds that the last few outbreaks have had,” Kines says. “That’s not to say the winds are going to be completely still, but it will probably feel about minus 5 degrees instead of feeling twenty or thirty degrees below zero.”

But after a cold start to the week, temperatures are expected to even out and become slightly more mild. Tuesday is expected to get up into the low 20’s, and Wednesday will get all the way into the mid 20’s. And outside the possibility of some light and scattered flurries, Kines doesn’t expect any significant snow.

Another breath of cold air will leave Thursday and Friday in the 15 to 20 degree range, leading into a cold weekend. But Kines says there’s a light at the end of the frigid tunnel.

“We’re hoping that the week afterwards tries to break the cold pattern we’ve been in,” Kines says. “We might get some days where temperatures are actually close to normal, which be in the lower 40s for that point. When it does get that mild, it might feel downright tropical.”
