The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in State College that is in effect from 5 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday.
There are forecasted snow accumulations of two to four inches over this period, with a tenth inch of ice accumulations. The snow will begin to develop on Monday and transition into a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain this evening before changing over to rain by Tuesday.
According to the AccuWeather forecast, snow in State College will being around 3 p.m. and run until 7 p.m. It will taper off before more snow and freezing rain hits the borough in the early hours of Tuesday morning, eventually turning to rain at around 7 a.m. That rain will continue all day tomorrow, pouring down until 6 p.m. with a high of 42 degrees that’s sure to melt away today’s accumulations.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) also issued a warning on Monday, urging the public to monitor forecasts and prepare for dangerous roadway conditions.
“Exactly how much snow or ice any given region will see will vary through the storm, but it’s certain that the forecast could mean potentially hazardous travel through tomorrow,” PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said. “We expect that much of the state will see some sort of icing overnight – that, combined with nighttime visibility, means drivers should consider postponing any unnecessary trips.”
The State College Area School District announced that all evening activities will be canceled and all facilities closed at 6 p.m. due to the weather forecast.
‘In the event that it becomes necessary to modify our school day for tomorrow you will receive further communications,’ the administrative team said in an e-mail.
It seems as though State College won’t get hit by the brunt of the snow storm, which is forecasted to drop a foot on some parts of the Commonwealth with substantial ice accumulations to boot.
