As temperatures drop on Thursday afternoon, roads may become icy and local school districts and Penn State’s University Park campus are dismissing early.

– Penn State will dismiss students at 12:30 p.m. Faculty and non-essential staff will be dismissed at 1 p.m. Normal operations will resume at 5 a.m. on Friday

– State College Area will dismiss elementary schools at 1 p.m. and secondary schools at 1:40 p.m.

– Bellefonte Area will dismiss secondary schools at 1 p.m. and elementary schools at 2 p.m.

– Bald Eagle Area will dismiss elementary students at 12:30 p.m. and secondary students at 12:40 p.m.

– Penns Valley Area will dismiss elementary students at 1:15 p.m., intermediate at 1:35 p.m. and high school at 1:45 p.m.

– Philipsburg-Osceola will dismiss secondary students at 11:30 a.m. and elementary students at 12:30 p.m.

After-school activities are canceled in each district.

A cold front moving into the region will cause temperatures to fall below freezing, and with rain and melting snow over the past 24 hours, roads and sidewalks may become slippery.

‘As the temperatures dip, the temperatures of the roads and sidewalks will follow a short time later,’ according to a National Weather Service statement. ‘Places which are currently wet could start to ice up as the day continues. The first places which would freeze up would be bridges, and untreated roads and walkways.

‘Use caution if you will be traveling this afternoon as a thin layer of ice may start to form, and a light dusting of snow is also expected over the Allegheny Mountains. Little or no snow is expected east of Interstate 99.’

Other closings/cancelations:

– According to Centre Region Parks and Recreation, the gate at Oak Hall Regional Park has been locked on Thursday because of unsafe, icy conditions in the parking area and on the trails.

– Discovery Space closed at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.

– Schlow Centre Region Library closed at 1:15 p.m. on Thursday.

– The Centre County Agricultural Land Preservation Board Meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday is canceled

– The Centre County Historical Society is closed on Thursday because of heavy ice on the driveway and walkways.

– The State College Planning Commission meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday has been canceled.

– Big Hollow Road, between Fox Hollow Building and the gate on Big Hollow Road near the Student Farm at University Park, is closed because of flooding, according to Penn State’s Office of Physical Plant. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area.
