A Bellefonte-area woman died after a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer Wednesday afternoon on U.S. Route 322 in Harris Township, according to State College police.
A preliminary investigation indicated the 68-year-old was driving a Toyota Rav 4 eastbound at about 12:30 p.m. when she crossed into the westbound lane and struck the tractor-trailer, Lt. Kelly Aston said. The crash happened around the 5600 block of the Mount Nittany Expressway, in the area where the road merges from four lanes to two.
The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was the only occupant of the SUV. She pronounced dead at the scene by the Centre County Coroner’s Office.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
Route 322 was closed between the eastbound Old Fort exit and the 322/Boal Avenue interchange near Boalsburg until about 4 p.m.
Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation pending autopsy results, according to police.
State College police, the Centre County Accident Reconstruction Team, Centre Lifelink EMS, Boalsburg and Alpha fire companies and the Centre County
Coroner’s Office responded to the scene.
