How Matt Campbell Is Adapting His Defensive Blueprint at Penn State

When head coach Matt Campbell arrived at Penn State, intrigue centered on how he would adapt the iconic defense pioneered by long-time defensive coordinator Jon Heacock.

At Iowa State, Heacock was a pioneer of the 3-3-5 scheme, leading many to wonder if that template would follow Campbell to his new home. Instead, Campbell revealed a schematic pivot back toward a four-down front on Tuesday at Big Ten Media Days. Reflecting on his coaching journey, Campbell pointed out that his foundational roots predated Heacock’s famous three-man front.

“When we were at Toledo, we were a four-down front with multiple variations,” Campbell said. “And in our first two years at Iowa State, we started as a four-down front before we evolved to what we did over the last eight years.”

That initial evolution was tailored to counter Big 12 spread attacks, allowing the potential to drop eight defenders into coverage. However, shifting offensive trends forced another adaptation. As Big 12 offenses transitioned toward pro-style looks utilizing multiple tight ends, Campbell’s opinion shifted.

“We felt like we had to evolve almost back to a four-down front at times,” Campbell said. “It made it really easy for us to identify ‘OK, who are we? What do we want to make sure we can do?’”

Against heavy tight end sets and strong running games in the Big Ten, adding an extra down lineman, and allowing new defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn to run a similar system to what he employed at USC and UCLA, became the prevailing sentiment. However, despite moving away from Heacock’s base 3-3-5, versatile coverage packages and alignments will remain a pivotal component.

“Multiplicity in what we do defensively is certainly critical,” Campbell said. “I think you’ll see us continue to be multiple, but it’ll start from a four-down front.”
