A new plaza honoring Penn State football history will be constructed outside of Beaver Stadium before the start of the 2023 season, the university’s athletic department announced on Thursday.
The Legacy Plaza will be located next to the south end zone tunnel along Curtin Road. It will include plaques from every season with each team’s schedule, results and team captains over 136 seasons and counting, as well as customized granite brick pavers that fans can purchase to be a part of the plaza.
“Penn State Football has rich tradition and history, and we are excited to be able to recognize all of those accomplishments with this new Legacy Plaza at Beaver Stadium,” Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Patrick Kraft said in a statement. “We want our Lettermen, Varsity ‘S’ members, Blue Band members and all of Nittany Nation to be a part of this celebration of Penn State Football.”
Fans can purchase bricks with personalized messages ranging in size and price — from $350 for a 4″ x 8″ brick to $1,000 for a 12″x12″ brick. The higher end options at $600 and $1,000 have space for a logo, with options for a Nittany Lion head logo, a Letterman’s Club logo (football lettermen only) or a Varsity ‘S’ logo (alumni varsity athletes only).
Each brick comes with a replica and certificate of recognition that will be mailed to the purchaser. Fans can also purchase additional replicas and display cases.
Brick packages are available at pennstatelegacyplaza.com.
The announcement of the Legacy Plaza comes a month after Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi said the university intends to undertake a major, multi-phase renovation of Beaver Stadium. No formal plans or timeline have been revealed, but her remarks seem to resolve years of study and discussion about whether to renovate the longtime home of Penn State football or build a new facility.
