Penn State men’s hockey has its first transfer addition of the offseason.
The Nittany Lions first portal victory came on Monday when Vermont freshman defenseman Caeden Herrington committed, according to multiple reports, including from Brad Schlossman.
Herrington tallied one goal and seven assists last season while blocking 20 shots across 34 games. The Catamounts posted a poor 13-21-1 record last season, including an 8-15-1 record against a tough Hockey East Conference. They fell to Boston in the opening round of the conference tournament to end the 2025-26 campaign.
Prior to joining Vermont, Herrington had brief stints with the Green Bay Gamblers and the Lincoln Stars of the USHL. He recorded one goal and three assists in 24 contests with the Gamblers and an impressive 16 goals and 20 assists in 63 games with the Stars during the 2024-25 season.
After leading all USHL defenders in scoring, Herrington was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings with the No. 120 overall pick in the fourth round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
He’ll join a new-look 2026-27 Penn State squad that lost Aiden Fink, Matt DiMarsico, Charlie Cerrato and Kevin Reidler to the NHL, JJ Wiebusch, Nic Chin-DeGraves and Cade Christenson to the transfer portal and Jarod Crespo, Carter Schade, Ben Schoen and Alex Servagno to graduation this offseason. Freshman phenom Gavin McKenna is also expected to depart for the NHL, though it’s not official.
