Penn State men’s hockey has taken another blow to its roster.
According to national hockey writer Mark Divver, forward JJ Wiebusch is transferring to Wisconsin. Wiebusch played in 37 games and tallied 16 goals, second-most on the team, with 20 assists, good for 36 points which ranked fourth on the team. The season prior, his first on campus, he appeared in 40 games with 14 goals and 19 assists, ranking third on the team with 33 points.
With goaltender Kevin Reidler and forwards Aiden Fink, Charlie Cerrato and Matt DiMarsico all signing NHL contracts, Wiebusch became the fifth departure this offseason. He was since followed by transfers Nic Chin-DeGraves and Cade Christenson. Presumptive first-overall pick Gavin McKenna is also expected to depart, which would leave Penn State without five of its top six point leaders from last season, including each of the top four, as well as a co-starter in net.
Wiebusch, a native of Verona, Wisconsin, will join his hometown squad and the national runner-ups last season. His departure was largely unexpected and marks the loss of another key player the Nittany Lions hoped to retain.
