Penn State wrestling continued to steamroll through its dual meet schedule with a 48-0 shellacking of Indiana on Friday night at Rec Hall.
The Nittany Lions got pins from Luke Lilledahl and Mitchell Mesenbrink, technical falls from Marcus Blaze, Shayne Van Ness, PJ Duke, Levi Haines and Cole Mirasola, and major decisions from Braeden Davis and Josh Barr. Rocco Welsh was the only Penn State wrestler without bonus points, winning by decision.
It was the fifth shutout in six dual meets for Penn State, which has lost only one bout in that span. The Nittany Lions improved to 10-0 on the season, 4-0 in Big Ten action, and extended their NCAA record dual meet victory streak to 81.
Next up for Penn State is a Saturday afternoon trip to Maryland. The Nittany Lions and Terrapins will face off at 5 p.m. in a meet that was moved up from Sunday because of forecasted heavy snow throughout the Mid-Atlantic

No. 1 Luke Lilledahl took control early against Indiana’s 11th-ranked Jacob Moran, scoring two first-period takedowns for a 6-1 lead heading into the second. After a Moran escape to start the second, Lilledahl got in for another takedown then locked in a bow and arrow for a pin at 4:20.

No.4 Marcus Blaze got a quick first-period takedown against Indiana’s Blaine Frazier, and after an escape worked behind the Hoosier for another. Frazier escaped, and Blaze countered a shot for his third takedown to carry a 9-2 lead into the second period. After a Frazier escape to start the second, Blaze countered an ankle pick for a takedown and added another before the period ended to extend the lead to 15-4. Blaze escaped to start the third then dropped in on Frazier’s legs for the bout’s final takedown and a 19-4 tech fall at 5:44

No. 11 Braeden Davis fell behind early as Indiana’s Henry Porter used a body lock for an early takedown. It was all Davis from there, though. The Nittany Lion scored two takedowns in the first and gave up an escape and an illegal hold point to take a 7-5 lead into the second. After a Porter escape, Davis added two takedowns and built his riding time to 2:52 as he led 13-7 going into the final period. An aggressive Davis went on an offensive blitz in the third with three takedowns, cutting Porter loose as he looked for the tech fall. Porter gave up a stall point but fended off a final takedown attempt and Davis settled for a 24-10 major decision.

No. 1 Shayne Van Ness opened the scoring against Indiana’s Joey Butler with a takedown and a turn for four near fall points. Butler escaped, but Van Ness got another takedown late and stayed on top for a 10-1 lead after one. Butler slowed the pace in the second, escaping and keeping Van Ness at bay to hold it to a 10-2 margin going into the third. Van Ness went to work quickly in the final period, escaping then getting behind the Hoosier for a takedown. After cutting Butler loose, Van Ness used a low single for a takedown and turned Butler for near fall points to end the bout with a 20-3 tech fall at 6:44

No. 3 PJ Duke put on a clinic against Indiana’s Bryce Lowery. The Nittany Lion freshman scored six first-period takedowns to take an 18-5 lead. Duke put it away quickly in the second with a final takedown out of a neutral start for a 21-5 tech fall at 3:16.

No. 1 Mitchell Mesenbrink overwhelmed Indiana’s 19th-ranked Tyler Lillard from the start. The Nittany Lion got a takedown off the opening whistle and used an arm bar to turn Lillard for four near fall points. Lillard worked his way out of the pin and escaped, but Mesenbrink drove through on a single leg for another takedown and again worked the arm bar for four near fall points and a 14-1 lead. Mesenbrink chose the top position to start the second and put Lillard on his back for the fall at 4:07, Mesenbrink’s seventh pin of the season.

No. 1 Levi Haines was also in control from the outset against Indiana’s Orlando Cruz. Haines got a takedown a minute in, turned Cruz for four near fall points and stayed in control to take a 7-0 lead into the second. A Haines escape and takedown extended the lead to 11-0 going into the final two minutes. Starting from neutral, Haines countered a Cruz shot, cut the Hoosier free and drove through on a double leg for a takedown to seal a 17-1 tech fall.

No. 1 Rocco Welsh scored three takedowns and a stall point to open up a 10-2 lead against Indiana’s No. 15-ranked Sam Goin after one. After a Goin escape to start the second, Welsh used a low double for a takedown and a 13-3 lead going into the third. Welsh escaped to start the final period, but Goin tripped the Nittany Lion to the mat to narrow the lead. Welsh escaped, and Goin countered a shot for his second takedown. The Hoosier got no more but avoided the bonus points as Welsh took a 15-9 decision.

No.. 1 Josh Barr got an early takedown and built 1:15 in riding time before Indiana’s 14th-ranked Gabe Sollars escaped. Leading 3-1, Barr escaped to start the second and added another takedown, then gave up a penalty point to take a 7-2 lead into the final two minutes. Sollars escaped at the start of the third, and Barr went back to work looking for bonus points. The Nittany Lion used a low double for a takedown, Sollars escaped, and Barr tripped him to the mat for another takedown. Sollars escaped and Barr got hit with a questionable second stall call. With a riding time point, though, Barr won a 14-6 major decision.

No. 12 Cole Mirasola put on an offensive display against Indiana’s Caleb Marzolino in the night’s final bout. Mirasola scored six takedowns, picked up a stall point, and closed out the bout with a seventh takedown for a 22-6 tech fall at 2:45.
