After being appointed in December to fill a vacancy on College Township Council, Susan Trainor will run for a full four-year term in the upcoming election, she announced on Tuesday.

She has filed nomination petitions to appear on the Democratic ballot in the May primary.

Trainor was unanimously appointed to fill the remaining year of former council member Paul Takac’s term after he was elected he was elected state representative for the 82nd District. Since being seated in January, Trainor has served on the Public Safety Committee and the Centre Region Council of Governments.

“It has been a privilege to serve my friends and neighbors, learn from my fellow council members and begin to understand the complexities of local governance,” Trainor said in a statement. “I hope to take the foundation of the knowledge I have accumulated, as well as my passion for the betterment of my community, and apply that to a full term on council. And I want to hear from all of you about the issues that matter – how we can keep our neighborhoods safe, provide necessary resources and make College Township a healthy, inclusive place to live for all.”

Trainor, a longtime Centre Region resident, called commitment to service and education “a cornerstone” of her career and volunteer work. She is a certified registered nurse practitioner and certified diabetes educator for Mount Nittany Health, serving rural communities throughout Centre County.

She also chairs the YMCA State College Branch Advisory Committee and is involved in several YMCA initiatives, including community building events, supporting food programs and serving as chair of the Annual Giving Campaign.

Three College Township Council positions are up for election this year. They are currently held by Carla Stilson, Richard Francke and Trainor.

Primary Election Day is May 16 and the General Election is Nov. 7.
