Penn State Baseball Unloads 14-Run Ninth Inning to Beat Pitt at PNC Park

Penn State baseball exploded Tuesday night with a 14-run ninth inning that included three-run homers from Josh Spiegel and Kyle Hannon to beat Pitt 19-6 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Trailing 6-5, 18 hitters came to the plate in the game’s final frame as the Panthers rolled through five pitches to try and slow the bleeding.

Spiegel gave the Nittany Lions the lead with a three-run blast while Hannon followed suit just three batters later with a three-run shot of his own. Tayven Kelley added a bases-clearing, three-run triple.

The 14-run inning was Penn State’s first inning with 10+ runs since scoring 10 in the first inning against Michigan State on May 1, 2021. Kelley’s triple was Penn State’s 18th of the season, setting a new program record. The Nittany Lions hit 17 triples in 1986, 2007 and 2010. Kelley leads PSU with four triples this year.

Penn State improved to 25-24 overall, while Pitt dropped to 27-23.

The Nittany Lions welcome Illinois for the final series of the regular season, a key Big Ten series. Thursday’s game will begin at 5 p.m. on Big Ten Network, followed by Friday’s game at 6 p.m. Saturday will begin at 1 p.m. followed by a Senior Day ceremony. Thursday is Throwback Thursday and Friday is Bark In The Park.
