Penn State Basketball: Buttrick and Jones Announce Transfer Destinations

Former Penn State men’s basketball forward Trent Buttrick and guard Myreon Jones each announced transfer destinations on Wednesday continuing an offseason of change for the Penn State basketball program . The 6-foot-8 big man will use his extra year of eligibility to play for the University of Massachusetts while the sharpshooting Jones will head to the University of Florida.

“First of all, I would like to thank Penn State University for the opportunity to become a student-athlete,” Buttrick said. “These past four years have been nothing short of unforgettable. Nittany Nation has welcomed me since the day I stepped foot on campus, and for that I am grateful. I will always be a Nittany Lion at heart.”

He also thanked former head coach Pat Chambers for “giving me a chance and believing in me.”

Buttrick had a career year during his senior season with the Nittany Lions. He played in 25 games, averaging three points and three rebounds per game. His Senior Night performance was the best game of his career, as he logged 13 points and seven rebounds.

Jones made no official announcement on his Twitter page aside from posting a graphic stating that he had committed to Florida. The Gators when 15-10 this past season and 9-7 in SEC play. As for Jones, he continued his solid shooting for Penn State in 2020 leading the Nittany Lions at a rate of 15.3 points per game in 25 games while scoring at least 20 points in six occasions during the year.

The duo makes for the second and third players to officially transfer out of Penn State following Jamari Wheeler’s decision to transfer to Ohio State. Big man John Harrar and forward Seth Lundy are both still in the transfer portal.

Guard Izaiah Brockington entered the portal but later announced he would return to Penn State under new head coach Micah Shrewsberry.
