BEA’s Koleno earns tourney title, 100th career win

A look at recent high school wrestling results:

Bald Eagle Area

Seth Koleno, of Bald Eagle Area, returned from the King of the Mountain tournament on Dec. 16 having earned his 100th career win, as well as the tournament’s 138-pound title.

Koleno’s victory came by way of a 15-6 major decision over Muncy’s Joe Klock in the semifinals of the tournament. The title match ended with a 5-0 decision over Phillipsburg, N.J.’s Cody Harrison.

As a team, the Eagles ended the tourney in ninth place, out of 32 teams.

Other BEA wrestlers to place included Garrett Rigg and Gage McClenahan, both in fourth in their respective weight classes. Rigg lost a 5-3 decision to Northern York’s Paul Feite, while Owen J. Roberts’ Dan Mancini overcame McClenahan, 4-2.
Garrett Giedroc fell to Council Rock South’s Braden Ricchini, 5-3, in the 113-pound fifth-place bout.

On Dec. 19, Bald Eagle came out on top over Huntingdon, 35-30. It came down to the final bout which resulted in Giedroc winning an 8-6 decision. Lucas Holderman (126), McClenahan (152) and Cooper Gillham (106) recorded falls in their bouts.

Central Mountain will pay 2-0 BEA a visit on Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. for their dual-meet.

 

Bellefonte

The Red Raiders wrestling team placed 28th out of 32 in the King of the Mountain tournament held at Central Mountain. The team scored 42 points.

Cole Stewart made it to the championship quarterfinals for the 126-pound weight class before being pinned by Jeremy Hanford, of Warrior Run, in 3:54. On the way to the quarterfinal, Stewart pinned his two opponents.

Maximilian Mondy earned eighth place at 195 pounds, with a 1-0 decision over Seneca Valley’s John Siwiak.
Bellefonte’s struggles continued Dec. 19 as the Red Raiders fell to Shikellamy, 35-25.

Ryan Smith (132), Alex Coppolo (120), Ethan Rossman (170) and Ethan Richner (152) won their bouts for Bellefonte.
The 1-1 Bellefonte wrestling team heads to Tyrone for a dual-meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21.

Penns Valley

With 87 points earned over the weekend, Penns Valley placed 14th out of 44 schools in the Panther Holiday Classic on Dec. 17.

Rams’ 113-pounder Baylor Shunk earned fourth place in the tournament, making it to the championship semifinals before losing a 10-7 decision to Brock McMillen, of Glendale.

In the consolation semis, Shunk won a 3-1 decision over Ethan Kauffman, of St. Joe’s, before falling by a 3-1 decision to Altoona’s Matt Sarbo.

Penns Valley fell to local rivals Philipsburg-Osceola 43-24 on Dec. 21. PV’s Abraham Allebach, Carter Felker, Dillon Covalt, Garrett Lucas and Baylor Shunk won their bouts.

The 1-1 Rams head into a week-long break for the holidays before heading to Clearfield for a dual meet Wednesday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m.

Philipsburg-Osceola

P-O opened their season with a 43-24 win over Penns Valley on Dec. 19.

Hunter Weitoish defeated Clayton Royer by a 5-2 decision at 132 pounds. Bradon Butler took down Charles Martin in 5:40. Ian Klinger, Matt Johnson, Brandon Anderson, Nick Bryan and Chase Chapman also won their bouts in the team victory.

The 1-0 Mounties wrestling team has a week off before partaking in the Buckskin Classic at Conestoga Valley High School. The tourney is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 29, and Saturday, Dec. 30.

St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy

Wolves fans have nothing to complain about after a fantastic opening to St. Joe’s wrestling season. The team won the Panther Holiday Classic on Dec. 17 with 192.5 points, 42.5 points above second-place Tunkhannock.

Amonn Ohl (106 pounds) and Zack Witmer (120) won their respective championships, while Malachi Duvall (126) came in second.

Ohl pinned all but one of his opponents, winning a 6-0 decision over Joey Fischer, of South Park, in the title bout. Witmer won three of his five bouts by pinfall, taking the title with a 3-1 decision over Josh Boozel, of Mount Union. Duvall won two of his bouts by pinfall, one by technical fall and one by decision, before losing a 7-2 decision to Everett’s Garret Cornell for the title.

Ethan Kauffman placed fifth in the 113-pound weight class by a 1-0 decision over Clay Rankin of Riverbend, Va.

St. Joes also won their program’s first home dual meet on Dec. 13 over Tyrone, 46-24. Nine out of 10 Wolves wrestlers won their bouts.
The 1-0 Wolves wrestling team heads back to the mat Friday, Dec. 29, and Saturday, Dec. 30, for Mount Mat Madness at Mount St. Joseph High School in Maryland.

State College

The Little Lions took home the victory over Jersey Shore on Dec. 14, 52-26. State College had nine wrestlers win their bouts in the victory, five by forfeit.

At 160 pounds, Lance Urbas pinned Jersey Shore’s Jason Winter in 2:49. Ian Barr won the 170-pound major decision 14-6 over Kyle Tomb. Cole Urbas pinned his 195-pound opponent David Tomb in 3:19. Last, but not least, 285-pounder Jackson Heasley pinned Hunter Black-Murray in only six seconds.

State College, standing at 1-1, heads to Mifflin County for a dual-meet Thursday, Dec. 21.
