STATE COLLEGE — The State College Area High School field hockey team won one of its three matches last week, but its biggest triumph might have come during one of the two setbacks.

The Lady Little Lions raised more than $1,300 on Friday, Oct. 4 when the team held its “Stick It To Cancer” game against Central Dauphin at the North Turf Field.

Proceeds from the game benefited women affected by breast cancer and their families. Funds brought in from the contest were given to the PA Breast Cancer Coalition, which provides care packages, patient advocacy, research grants, educational outreach and legislative advocacy to those touched by the disease.

“The “Stick It To Cancer” fundraiser was an opportunity for our team and our State College field hockey family to be up to something bigger,” Lady Little Lion coach Bethany Mink said. “It was a chance for us to raise awareness for an organization that affects thousands of people globally and their families.

“We are very proud of our contribution to the PA Breast Coalition and to stand side by side with them.”

The amount of money raised was reported by booster club president Janelle Moyer through volunteer assistant coach Linda Bonness. Final exact figures were not available at press time.

“We felt the fundraiser turned out great,” Mink said. “Central Dauphin brought a great crowd to the game so they were able to participate in the event as well. I would like to thank our booster club, who really set the foundation so this event could be as successful as it was.”

The Lady Little Lions wore white jerseys with pink numbers that night.

State College lost the varsity game, 6-1, as Hope Rose and Riley Yonchick scored two goals apiece for the Lady Rams.

State College already was down five goals when Libby Fortin converted off a pass from Rebecca Bonness for the Lady Little Lions’ only goal with 13:10 remaining in the match. State only had two shots on goal.

Bayla Furmanek made seven saves for the Lady Little Lions, while Maddie Tambroni registered a pair of defensive saves.

Central Dauphin got on the board 5 minutes into the match when Yonchick scored on Hannah Guarente’s assist, and Yonchick made it 2-0 with 8:05 left in the first half. Guarente then scored off a corner as time expired before the intermission.

Rose, a Maryland recruit, scored unassisted at the 23:56 mark of the second half and again with 5:51 left, sandwiched around a Bella Culp tally.

Liz Morocko scored the only goal in the junior varsity match, as State College won, 1-0.

Four different Lady Little Lions found the net in a 4-0 Mid-Penn Conference Commonwealth Division win against visiting Mifflin County on Wednesday, Oct.

2.

It was senior night for State College, and Fortin, Kendall Kleinman and Morgan Marshall were recognized before the start of the varsity contest. Sarah Shallenberger got State on the board at 22:16 of the first half, scoring after a pass from Lizzie Paterno. Kyra Whitlark fired in a shot off a Rebecca Bonness assist at 4:01, before Johnannah Lee scored on a corner feed from Tambroni just before the half.

Emma Barlett added an insurance goal unassisted with just 4:07 left in the contest.

Furmanek made five saves to record the shutout.

State College won the junior varsity match, 2-0.

The Lady Little Lions were unable to duplicate a win earlier this season when they made a trip to Carlisle on Tuesday, Oct. 8 for a Mid-Penn Conference encounter. State came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision, dropping the team’s record to 5-9.

The match originally had been scheduled for Monday but was postponed because of rain.

Chloe Overmiller scored the only goal of the match with 26:26 left in the second half, the assist going to Kenzie Parthemorel.

The State College junior varsity was a 4-1 winner.
