Centre County Schools Closed on Friday, Penn State Cancels Early Classes

Centre County school districts are closed on Friday and Penn State has delayed the start of classes and work because of an impending winter storm.

A winter storm advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday throughout central Pennsylvania, with total snow accumulations of 3 to 4 inches expected and locally higher amounts on hilltops, according to the National Weather Service. AccuWeather is forecasting 1 to 3 inches, with the bulk coming between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Slippery driving conditions that could impact the morning and evening commutes.

At Penn State’s University Park campus, in-person classes, activities and work (other than essential services for maintaining campus operations) are canceled from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Bald Eagle, Penns Valley and Philipsburg-Osceola school districts are closed and will have flexible instruction days. Bellefonte and State College are closed with no classes.

State College Area School District noted in its announcement that PennDOT has planned Tier 2 restrictions on Interstate 99 beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Friday. Tier 2 restrictions prohibit buses, as well as tractors without trailers, tractors with unloaded or lightly loaded trailers, unloaded or lightly loaded box trucks, passenger vehicles towing trailers, motorcycles and RVs.

“Because of expected poor road conditions and the forecasted duration of the storm, we believe there won’t be a safe window to transport students,” the district wrote.
