Centre County Adds 1 New COVID-19 Death, 80 Cases

Centre County registered one new COVID-19 death and 80 more cases of the virus on Saturday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The death is the county’s 235th attributed to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic and fourth this month. 

The new cases bring Centre County’s total to 19,104 (17,303 confirmed and 1,801 probable).

Pennsylvania added 4,966 positives to increase the statewide total to 1,407,792.

With 64 new COVID-19 deaths statewide, Pennsylvania’s total is 29,128.

The county also had 211 new negative test results for a total of 78,880. Statewide there were 13,155 negatives to bring the total to 5,403,304.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center had 36 COVID-19 patients, ranging in age from 19 to 80, on Friday afternoon. Four were in intensive care and three were on ventilators. According to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard, 29 of the COVID-19 inpatients were not vaccinated against the virus and seven were fully vaccinated.

For the past week, Mount Nittany had an average daily census of 34 COVID-19 inpatients, up from 28 the previous week.

Since Sept. 1, Mount Nittany has had a total of 106 COVID-19 inpatients, according to a hospital spokesperson. That’s 37 more than it had for the month of August and seven times as many as it had in September 2020.

Statewide, Pennsylvania has 2,677 COVID-19 inpatients, an increase of 36 since Friday, with 662 in intensive care and 351 on ventilators [+27]. Hospitalizations are at their highest level since April 23.

For the week of Sept. 17-23, Pennsylvania had 2,458.9 average daily COVID hospitalizations, up from 2,267.1 the prior week, according to the updated Department of Health early warning monitoring dashboard.

An estimated 90% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation that considers a case as recovered if it has not been reported as a death and it is more than 30 days past the date of the first positive test or onset of symptoms.

Positivity rate

Centre County’s PCR testing positivity rate for the week of Sept. 17-23 was 9.1%, up from 8.6% the previous seven days, according to the monitoring dashboard. The rate was 16th lowest among Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.

The county had 344 new cases for that seven-day period, 11 more than the prior week.

The statewide positivity rate was 8.9%, unchanged from the previous seven previous seven days. The commonwealth had 25,134 new positives between Sept. 17-23, down from 25,478 the prior week.

Cases Among Children

For the 2021-2022 school year, DOH is providing weekly updated case counts for two age groups: 0-4 capturing preschool and daycare age children and 5-18 capturing kindergarten through high school age children. The case counts do not necessarily represent exposure in school or daycare settings and the location of exposure cannot be determined in most cases.

For the week of Sept. 15-21, there were nine new cases among children in the 0-4 age group and 81 in the 5-18 age group in Centre County. About 29% of all cases in Centre County that week were among children 0-18.

Since Aug. 16, there have been 364 cases among individuals between the ages of 0 and 18 in Centre County: 42 between the ages of 0-4 and 322 between the ages of 5 and 18

Transmission Level

All 67 counties in Pennsylvania are at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update on Friday afternoon.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Saturday morning, 82,830 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated [+273 since Friday] and 6,333 are partially covered [-32]. Booster doses have been administered to 1,284 county residents [+57]. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 61.4% of the county’s entire population and 68.4% of adult residents have received at least one dose. Among the total county population, 58.5% are fully vaccinated.

Statewide, 68.2% of adults are vaccinated and Pennsylvania is fifth in the nation for total doses administered, according the CDC.
