Centre County Adds 17 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 1,520 New Positives

Centre County reported 17 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday and moved back to the Centers for Disease Control’s substantial level for community transmission of the virus.

The CDC listed the county as the substantial level — the second highest on its transmission scale — on Thursday, then at the moderate level on Friday before once again moving it back to substantial on Saturday afternoon. Transmission levels are based on on total new cases per 100,000 population in the past seven days and percentage of positive tests over the same period, so can change on a day-to-day basis.

At the substantial and high levels of transmission, CDC guidance recommends that all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Among bordering counties, Clearfield and Clinton also have substantial transmission. Forty-three of the state’s 67 counties are at the substantial or high level.

With Saturday’s new cases, Centre County has had 17,153 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Pennsylvania added 1,520 cases on Saturday to increase the statewide total to 1,235,396.

Centre County also reported 193 negative test results for a total of 73,350. Statewide, there were 8,117 new negatives for a total of 4,957,873.

Centre County’s positivity rate and new cases increased for a fourth consecutive week, according to the updated DOH early warning monitoring dashboard. For the week of July 30-Aug. 5, the county’s PCR testing positivity rate was 4.8%, up from 3.6% the previous seven days. The rate was for 30th among Pennsylvania counties.

The county had 69 confirmed cases during that period, up from 43 the prior week.

The statewide positivity rate was 5.4.%, up from 3.9% the previous seven days. It was the fifth consecutive week Pennsylvania’s positivity rate increased after 12 consecutive weeks of decreases. The commonwealth had 7,051 new positives last week, up from 4,232 the prior week.

According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 11 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, unchanged from Friday. Two are in intensive care [+1] and none are on ventilators.

Average daily COVID-specific hospitalizations in Centre County increased from to 9.0 to 10.0 for the week of July 30-Aug. 5.

Across the commonwealth, hospitalizations continue to increase. Pennsylvania has 692 COVID-19 inpatients [+24], with 167 in intensive care [+19] and 77 on ventilators [-7].

Statewide average COVID hospitalizations increased from 418.9 to 556.4 for the week of July 30-Aug. 5.

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents on Saturday, keeping the total at 228. 

With four new COVID-19 deaths statewide, Pennsylvania’s total is now 27,902.

An estimated 96% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation

As of Saturday morning, 78,261 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated and 5,826 are partially covered.

Vaccination appointments for ages 12 and older are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.
