Harry J. Speer, 83, formerly of Pleasant Gap, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away peacefully at Eagle Valley Personal Care Home on Friday, May 8, 2026. Born on August 17, 1942, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Harry R. and Helen (Ward) Speer.
Harry was a 1961 graduate of Bellefonte Area High School. Throughout his life, he worked a variety of jobs before beginning his longtime career with Corning in State College, where he remained until his retirement in 2008 after many dedicated years of service.
Harry was of the Methodist faith and was deeply committed to his community. He was a life member of the Pleasant Gap Fire Company, where he served in many capacities and generously volunteered his time for numerous fundraising events. He was also a long-time member of the Centre Hall Lions Club, once again lending his support to many community fundraisers and activities.
In his free time, Harry enjoyed gardening and playing bingo, but above all else, he cherished time spent with his family. He loved each of them dearly, and his greatest joy came from his grandchildren, who held a very special place in his heart.
Harry is survived by his two children: Suzanne M. Swart and her fiancé, Shawn Burke, of Montrose, and Michael J. Speer of Pleasant Gap. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Kaylee Swart and R. Joseph Swart: his great-grandson, Matthias, one niece and several great nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, May 15, 2026, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Daughenbaugh Funeral Home in Milesburg. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Catherine Dittman officiating. Interment will be held at Centre County Memorial Park in State College.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Gap Fire Company, 475 Robinson Lane, Pleasant Gap, PA 16823.
