Joseph J. “Joe” Swancer, 91, of Clarence, passed away on Monday, May 1, 2023, at the Mt. Nittany Medical Center in State College. Born on September 30, 1931, in Clarence, he was the son of the late William and Suzanna (Seprish) Swancer. On October 1, 1956, in Clarence, he married Margaret A. Little. Margaret passed away on August 25, 1967. 

Joe attended the Clarence School. He enlisted in the United States Army on August 4, 1950, and received his honorable discharge on August 6, 1953. He earned the rank of Corporal and was part of the Military Police. He received the Korean Service Medal w/2 BCS for his service.

Joe was a member of the Queen of Archangels Parish Church in Clarence. He was a Machinist at the JH France Refractory in Clarence for 27 years, retiring in 1993. 

Joe was an enthusiastic outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, going to camp, canoeing, and horseback riding. He was an avid gun collector and loved going to gun shows. He enjoyed target shooting his pistols. He would compete in shooting competitions and has won many trophies for his marksmanship. 

Joe is survived by his daughter, Susan Strickler and her husband, Daniel, of York, two step daughters: Patricia Snook and her husband, Gene, of Dover, and Bernadine Lanager of Bellefonte, and one step son, Stephen Swancer and his wife, Marie, of Dover.

Joe is also survived by his one brother, George Swancer and his wife, Maxine, of Lewisburg; three sisters: Betty Walker of Clarence, Velda McCloskey of Snow Shoe and Cecelia Glace of Pine Glen; nine grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

Along with his parents and wife, Joe was preceded in death by two brothers and seven sisters.

Visitation will be on Sunday, May 7, 2023, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm with a Rosary Service at 7:45pm at the Daughenbaugh Funeral Home in Snow Shoe. Funeral Mass will be on Monday, May 8, 2023, at 11am at the Queen of Archangels Parish Church in Clarence with Father Michael Wolfe officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery.
