Maxine McCartney Gates, 81, of Howard, was called home to God’s Kingdom on Monday, February 3, 2025. She joins her parents and husband, Timothy Gates, who preceded her in death.
On February 20, 1943, Maxine was born on her family’s homestead in McCartney Town, Pennsylvania. She graduated in 1961 from Bald Eagle Area High School. On October 20, 1962, she married her husband of 53 years. Together they had four daughters, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and remained life-long residents of Centre County. She enjoyed everyday pleasures—like savoring a cup of coffee, visiting friends, family genealogy and taking car rides around Bald Eagle State Park. A born naturalist, she delighted in sharing her knowledge of birds, bees and butterflies, especially the Monarch.
Maxine was the very embodiment of grace, kindness, and strength. She exuded beauty both inside and out. She consistently sought to be a positive presence for others, offering strength and compassion in times of need. Maxine taught those around her how to lean on their faith through life’s challenges. Clever, creative, kind-hearted, and fearless, she led with love and was generous with her time, wisdom, and talents.
Maxine’s legacy lives on through her four daughters: Kimberly Flick (Stacey) of Howard, Katherine Gates (Paul) of Howard, Karman Gates (Harold) of Howard, and Kandace Hawkins (Len) of DuBois. She is the cherished grandmother of: Karey Walk, Ross Flick, Nicholas Pistone, Maria Swann, Lauren Halliday, Cody Halliday, Kayla Flick, Megan Bennett, Katheryn Hacker, Alayna Gigliotti and Jared Hawkins, and the Great-Grandmother of her beloved great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her siblings: Martha Hensen of Michigan, Philip McCartney and Mary Gates of Howard. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her siblings: Evelyn Shetler, K. Thomas McCartney, and J. Edward McCartney.
Following Maxine’s wishes, there will be no public services. She will be laid to rest privately with her husband at Eagle Cemetery, Boggs Township.
