Obituary of Barbara Ann Thiel, 71

Barbara Ann Thiel, 71, of State College, formerly of Pittsburgh, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at Mount Nittany Medical Center.

Born Jan. 25, 1939, in Bellefonte, she was a daughter of the late G. Nicholas and H. Veronica Kinnally Thiel. She was a 1956 graduate of State College Area High School and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from Penn State in 1960. Barbara was a teacher at Oakland Catholic High School and Sacred Heart High School in Pittsburgh, for 23 years, retiring in 2003. She also served as the Director of Highland Park Community Club Day Camp during the summers from 1979 to 1987. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pittsburgh and a new member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in State College. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, sports and book clubs and was adored by her Thiel nieces.

She is survived by two sons, Michael B. McCartney and his wife, Michele, of Montgomery Village, Md., and Matthew P. McCartney, of Pittsburgh; two grandsons, Nicholas and Kai McCartney; two brothers, Glenn F. Thiel and his wife, Sally, and David N. Thiel and his wife, Linda, all of State College; and a sister, Joan Maxwell and her husband, William, of Keene, N.H.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Reverend Charles Ugo officiating. Burial will be in Centre County Memorial Park.
