Barry David Smith, Ph.D., 64, of Canyon Lake, Texas, passed away on Monday, May 31, 2010, at Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos, Texas.

Barry, son of Derrill and Mary Ellen Smith, of State College, was born on Nov. 24, 1945, in Spangler, Pa. Barry was married to Janet Umbower Smith, who survives along with their two children Duane Smith (Yvette), of San Marcos, Texas and Jenise Walton (Joe), of Austin, Texas. Also surviving are four grandchildren Haley and Richelle Smith, and Sierra and Joseph Walton. Barry is survived by his parents; three brothers, Robert Smith (Patty), of Altoona, William Smith (Rachel), of State College, and Don Smith (Essie), of Pleasant Gap; and three sisters, Susan Papaioannou (George) of Merrick, NY, Karen Fisher (David), of Bellefonte, and Joyce Loesch (Denny), of Julian.

Barry served in the Navy from 1965 to 1967. He graduated from State College High School in 1965, received a B.A. from Penn State in 1975, a Masters from Eastern Kentucky University in 1977 and a Ph.D. from Sam Houston State University in 1981. Barry taught in the Department of Criminal Justice at Southeast Missouri State University from 1981 to 1984 and at Texas State University from 1984 to his retirement as Associate Professor Emeritus in 2001.

Barry was a popular professor who inspired and enriched the lives of his students. He was an expert pool player and had a grand passion for grilling and BBQ.

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 4, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. at Thomason Funeral Home in San Marcos. Private services will be at the convenience of the family.
