Betty Mickey Herreon was born in Elgin, Illinois on June 18, 1926 & died of an apparent heart attack on January 23, 2016. Betty was the first of seven children born to Robert C. Mickey and Esther A. Russell Mickey. She is survived by her husband Robert H. Herron, her daughters Meg Barton and Elizabeth Herron, son in law Warren Christensen and her Grandchildren Heather Barton, Zachary, Alec and Nick Christensen, and one sister, Mary Johnson.

Betty grew up on a dairy farm near Belvidere, Illinois. She saved enough money to pay for her own education at the University of Illinois where she received her bachelor's degree in Home Economics. She worked as a teacher, tax collector and real estate agent. Betty was always a strident advocate for women's rights, and a devoted member of the Unitarian Universalist church while being a loving wife, mother and excellent homemaker. She was active in Planned Parenthood, and she was president and secretary of the League of Women's Voters for many years.

Betty had an adventurous spirit, she and her husband Bob traveled all over the world, skied in Europe and many places in the United States and Canada, she also sailed in the Caribbean, and up and down the eastern seaboard with her husband and good friends.

Betty Herron loved music; she played the piano and studied voice. Sewing was her artistic expression. She was a gifted seamstress and sewed beautiful clothes for herself and her daughters. Later in life she took up quilting and she designed and meticulously hand crafted imaginative quilts, and knitted lovely sweaters and other apparel.

She gave the world her intellect, quiet competence, sharp insights, buoyant spirit and joyous loving heart.

A celebration of Betty's life will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Centre County on March 12th at 2:00 PM. Instead of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the UUFCC, 780 Waupelani Dr. Extension, State College, PA 16801.
