Carolyn Chamberlin Curtin Weixel died on Feb. 2, 2010, in The Fairways at Brookline, State College. She was 96 years old. She had resided in Bellefonte and Mingoville before moving to Brookline in State College.

Born Oct. 15, 1913, in Bellefonte, she was the daughter of John Curtin and Jane Furst Curtin. On Dec. 13, 1937, she married Dr. John Gerard Weixel who predeceased her on Feb. 7, 1987. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Mary Carolyn, in 1941.

She graduated from Fairfax Hall School in Virginia in 1930 and from the Washington School of Physical Education in 1934 along with her lifelong friend, the late Anne Dale Harvey of Bellefonte. She enjoyed the outdoors including birding, figure skating, gardening, wildflowers and trout fishing. She was noted for the trout flies she tied, having been trained in the art by George Harvey. Carolyn was an avid golfer and won the Women's Club Championship at Nittany Country Club at least sixteen times.

In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she did volunteer work at the Centre County Library and the Centre County Hospital, having served as President of the Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Centre County Historical Society, the Antiquists and the Civil War Round Table.

She is survived by two sons, John C. Weixel, of Wexford, and David M. Weixel, of Mill Hall; two granddaughters, Beth Weixel and Erin Weixel, both of Mechanicsburg; a step granddaughter, Amy Barton, of York; a step great-granddaughter, Alexis Barton; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a sister, Jane Downey, of Lancaster. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three brothers, John Curtin Jr., William Curtin and Robert Curtin.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions can be made to the Centre County Library & Historical Museum, 200 N. Allegheny St., Bellefonte, PA 16823. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service Inc., Bellefonte.
