Catherine E. (Kay) Lang, 90, Williamsport, Md., died on Dec. 27, 2009, at home under the care of Hospice.

Kay was born on July 21, 1919, in Columbus, Ohio and grew up in eastern Ohio and State College. She graduated from State College High School and later from Penn State University in 1940 in Home Economics with a major in Early Childhood Development. She subsequently obtained a Masters Degree in Education from Penn State. Kay belonged to the Kappa Delta Sorority and the Penn State Alumni Association.

As teacher and later principal in the State College Area School District, Kay touched the lives of countless students while serving at Fairmount Street School, Corl Street Elementary School and Easterly Parkway Elementary School, among others, until her retirement in 1977. In addition, she taught for two years in the 1950s in Honolulu, Hawaii at the University Demonstration School and for two years at the International School in Santiago, Chile in the late 1960s besides her early career teaching in nursery schools.

She was life member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and National Education Association. After retiring, she made her home in Cherry Grove Beach, S.C. and Bradenton, Fla. before moving to Homewood in Williamsport, Md. in 1997. A lifelong Methodist, Kay belonged to the Bedington United Methodist Church ((W. Va.), and for many years, St. Paul's United Methodist Church (State College).

Kay was involved in many organizations throughout her life including over 40 years in P.E.O.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Chauncey P. and Catherine E. Lang. She is survived by her sisters, Barbara A. Goodman, (Baltimore, Md.) and Phyllis A. Moffitt (Falling Waters, W. Va.); nephew and spouse, John L. and Melissa Moffitt (Martinsburg, W. Va.); niece and spouse, Carol A. and Woody Schaumberg, (Baltimore, Md.); nieces Lynne F. Moffitt, (Roanoke, Va.) and Judith A. Moffitt, (Virginia Beach, Va.); great niece and spouse, Christina and Richard Barrett; great nephews and spouses, Theodore Schaumberg, Frank and Lindsay Schaumberg, and Craig and Laura Moffitt; great-great nieces, Lanie Craig, Reese and Reagan Barrett and great-great nephews, Frank Jr., Zachary and Tristan Schaumberg, Wyatt and Luke Moffitt. She is also survived by her former niece-in-law Annette Moffitt (Falling Waters, W. Va.) and a special friend of the family, Natasha Boyle Hughes (Phoenix, Ariz.).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Bedington United Methodist Church, 580 Bedington Road, Martinsburg, WV 25404 or the Homewood Foundation, P.O. Box 250, Williamsport, MD 21795. Kay Lang will be interred in the Centre County Memorial Park, State College. The Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Bryan K. Kenworthy P.A., 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown has been entrusted with the arrangements.
