George W. Lauck Jr. 89 of Pennsylvania Furnace, died following a brief illness on Sunday, March 31, 2013 at Mt. Nittany Medical Center at State College.

He was born September 16, 1923 in Pine Grove Mills, he is a son of the late George W. Sr. and Olive E. (Tanyer) Lauck.

George was a 1941 graduate of State College Area High School and a 1949 graduate of the Altoona School of Commerce.

On May 9, 1953, he was married to Ruth Isabella (McCulloch) Lauck, who preceded him in death on June 23, 2009.

Mr. Lauck served with the 3535th Ordnance Medium Automotive Maintenance Company in the U. S. Army during World War II from January 11, 1943 through February 13, 1946; earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. For his service he earned a Good Conduct Medal, a Philippines Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star, and American Theater Service Medal, and an Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with two Bronze Stars. From January 15, 1951 through August 23, 1952, he served in Fort Campbell, KY with the National Guard, obtaining the rank of Master Sergeant.

George was employed and retired as the Postmaster for Pine Grove Mills Post Office.

He was a member and charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5825 in Pine Grove Mills, was a member of the American Legion Post 245 in State College, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and was an active member of the Pine Grove Mills Church for 80 years, serving as a Clerk of Session for the church.

Mr. Lauck enjoyed gardening, raising flowers and cooking. He served as a volunteer at the snack shop at Mt. Nittany Medical Center, for thirty years.

He is survived by one son, George W. Lauck III and his wife Jannette Ober-Lauck of Pennsylvania Furnace; one sister, Bettyann Horner of State College; one brother, Robert Lauck and his wife Dorothy of Pine Grove Mills; two grandchildren, Geoffrey W. Lauck of Lemont and Kathryn L. Bayletts of Shingletown; three step-grandchildren, Timothy LaVanish of Pine Grove Mills, Kristin LaVanish of Santa Rosa, CA, and Beth LaVanish of Altoona; one step-great-grandchild, Braeden LaVanish of Pine Grove Mills; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by family members, Jane Harpster of Glenolden, PA, Helyn Sunday of Pine Grove Mills, James and Paul Lauck, both of Pine Grove Mills.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013, beginning at 11:00 AM at the Pine Grove Mills Presbyterian Church, 150 W. Pine Grove Road, Pine Grove Mills with the Rev. Carl Campbell officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Pine Grove Mills Presbyterian Church, 150 W. Pine Grove Road, P.O. Box 241, Pine Grove Mills, PA 16868.
