James C. Young Jr., 85, of Bellefonte, died on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at Mt. Nittany Medical Center.

He was born in Bellefonte on June 18, 1925, a son of the late James C. and Helen A. Harter Young.

A graduate of Walker Township High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during his senior year .

During World War II from 1943 to 1946 he served as a hospital corpsman on the destroyer escort ship USS Fechteler DE157, which was sunk while they were patrolling waters in the Mediterranean. He spent 11 hours in the water before being rescued.

A graduate of Bliss Electrical School in Washington D.C., Jim served as an electrician for New York State Electric and Gas for 38 years, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Catholic Church in Bellefonte.

He was married on Aug. 9, 1947 to Harriett Tahany, who preceded him in 1988. On July 24, 1992 he married Phyllis Deitrich Wallace who survives at home.

Jim was a member of Nittany Country Club. He was a great golfer and had three holes-in-one. He was proud to have shot a 78 when he was 82 years old. He was a member of the Elks Club in Bellefonte and a member of the NYSEG Quarter Century Club and Knights of Columbus.

Jim was a good friend and helped many.

Along with his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy (Young) Livine and her husband Dr. Mark Livine of Vermont; a step-daugher, Sandi (Wallace) Keach and husband Doug of Maryland; a stepson, Stan Wallace and his wife Kim of Bellefonte; two grandchildren, Michael and Rachel Livine; three step grandchildren, Zachary Keach, Angie Smith and Matt Allen; two step great grandchildren, Lydia and Ozzie Smith; two sisters, Virginia Meyer of Lamar and Mildred Rogers of Zion, and three brothers, Dale Young of Beccaria, Theodore of Runville and Haldane "Mike," of Loganton.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, 134 E. bishop St., Bellefonte, with Father Val Bradley as celebrant. Burial will be at Hublersburg Cemetery, Walker Township.

Friends will be received at the Kader-Neff Funeral Home, 135 W. Main St., Howard, from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
