Janet B. Russell, 69, of rural Roaring Spring, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, after a courageous battle with ALS.

Born Nov. 12, 1940, in Altoona, she was a daughter of the late Wilfred G. and Frances H. (Henry) Buck. On July 12, 1958, she married John H. Russell, who survives. Mrs. Russell was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg. She spent many years working alongside her husband in their family trucking business, J.H. Russell Inc. Mrs. Russell volunteered for Home Nursing Agency, and found great joy in taking care of others in need. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Bellefonte.

She enjoyed traveling, bird watching and in keeping in touch with friends and family with cards and letters. Janet was happiest in the kitchen, and planning parties for her friends and family gatherings.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, J. David and his wife, Mellissa, of Tyrone, James C. and his wife, Pamela, of Curryville, and Daniel S., of State College; two daughters, Cynthia R. Frost and her husband, Virgil, and Jennifer R. Wismeyer, and her husband, Shane, all of Martinsburg; 12 grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Gordon M. Russell, who was raised in their home and also resides there. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, William G., on July 3, 1970; and a grandson, Luke R. Wismeyer, on Feb. 4, 1999.

Friends will be received from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2010, with Pastor Judith E. Simonson officiating. Private interment will be held at Burkett Cemetery, Warriors Mark.

The family prefers memorial contributions be given to the ALS Association, Western Pennsylvania Chapter, 416 Lincoln Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15209, or to Home Nursing Hospice, 201 Chestnut Ave., Altoona, PA 16601. Arrangements are under the direction of John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., 111 E. Allegheny St., Martinsburg.
