Obituary of Joseph John Korkus , 50

Joseph John Korkus, 50, died suddenly on September 30, 2011 at his residence in Seward, Alaska.

Born on August 26, 1961 in Bridgeport, PA, Montgomery Co., he was the son of Eleanor (Bruno) Korkus of State College and the late Joseph Kevin Korkus

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Shaw, her husband Timothy Shaw and his nieces, Sydney and Haley Shaw; his brother, Steven F. Korkus and Steven’s life partner Adam Fogelsanger.

Joe was a 1980 graduate of State College Area High School. He worked at The Bakery in downtown State College from 1980 until 1999. He was a skilled baker working early mornings to produce bagels, pastries, and rolls for the State College community for over 20 years. He spent many of his summers working for the National Park Service in the western United States including, Glacier National Park, Shoshone National Park and Yellowstone National Park.

Joe’s first visit to Alaska was in 1985. As an avid outdoorsman, with a love for fishing, hunting and photography, he eventually made Seward, Alaska his home. Joe believed the best things in life are all around us; you just have to get out and expereince them! He lived in his heaven on earth along side the grizzly bears, the soaring eagles, and the running salmon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joe’s memory may be made to the Father Bender Community Center at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, P O Box 8186, State College, PA 16805 or to St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, P O Box 331, Centre Hall, PA 16828.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 6 at 11:00AM at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 867 Grays Woods Boulevard, State College, PA.
