Regina E. Lagakos, 61, of Wellesley Hills, Mass., formerly of Bellefonte, died on Monday, Oct. 12, 2009 as a result of a car accident. Stephen Lagakos and his mother, Helen Lagakos were also killed in the accident in Rindge, New Hampshire.
Born Nov. 30, 1947 in Johnstown, she was the daughter of Bernice and Donald Eckenrode. Regina was a 1965 graduate of Bellefonte Area High School. She attended Mt. Mercy College (now Carlow College) in Pittsburgh. On Aug. 17, 1968 she married Stephen Lagakos. She completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology at the University of Maryland in 1969. She was employed by the Social Security Administration in Washington DC, Buffalo N.Y., and Boston, Mass. For several years Regina was employed by Wellesley High School where she was an Instructional Technology Specialist. Most recently, she worked at Frontier Science Foundation in Boston where she was a data manager. Regina was an avid gardener, cook, reader and photographer.
She is survived by her two sons, David, of Phoenix, Ariz. and Adrian, of Wellesley Hills, Mass., and two brothers, Daniel of Erie and Thomas of Westminster, Md. She was predeceased by her brother David, who was killed in the Vietnam War in 1968.
A memorial service was held on Oct. 17, 2009, in Rindge, N.H. Memorial contributions may be made in Regina's honor to the "Lagakos Family Fund" which Stephen founded to support students from developing countries who are studying biostatistics at Harvard University.
