Penn State men’s basketball has hired Adam Fisher as associate head coach, the program announced on Monday.

Fisher is the first announced staff hire under new head coach Micah Shrewsberry.

Fisher previously joined Penn State’s staff in 2011 under then new head coach Pat Chambers as video coordinator and was promoted to director of player development in 2012.

Following a short stint in State College, Fisher joined the Miami program under coach Jim Larrañaga, where he spent the next eight seasons prior to Monday’s announcement. He was promoted to assistant coach for the Hurricanes in May 2015.

“When I was looking to find the right person to start my new staff, I wanted to find the perfect fit, and I found that perfect fit in Adam,” Shrewsberry said in a press release. “He is well liked, a hard worker and a family man. The more I talked to him, the more I noticed how our values aligned. He is also a loyal Penn Stater who will fight every day to help us be successful. I’m excited to welcome Adam, Rebecca and Alivia to our basketball family!”

While Fisher will provide the new-look program and Shrewsberry with some immediate guidance as it pertains to the Penn State landscape, Fisher also gives the Nittany Lions another recruiter with in-state experience that will go a long way toward continuing Penn State’s growing reputation in Pennsylvania’s recruiting areas of interest.

“I am honored and beyond excited to be coming home to coach at my alma mater,” Fisher said. “I want to thank Coach Shrewsberry for this amazing opportunity to be a part of his program from day one. His vision, passion and family values will quickly be apparent to the Penn State community and all of the alumni. The future of this program is in incredible hands with his leadership.”

Miami is coming off one of the most successful decades in the program’s history, notching four straight 20+ win seasons from 2011-18 with four NCAA Tournament appearances and two Sweet 16 runs over that same span. During that stretch, Fisher worked with 2018 NBA Draft No. 18 overall pick and Reading native Lonnie Walker, who is now in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs.

No timeline has been given yet for the remainder of Shrewsberry’s hiring announcements. Penn State’s new head coach has yet to hold his first press conference, only just arriving on campus this past weekend.

Shrewsberry is, however, expected to continue to hire assistants with in-state or regional experience.
