Penn State Men’s Basketball Pat Chambers Resigns Following Internal Investigation

Penn State head men’s basketball coach Patrick Chambers has resigned following an internal investigation of new allegations of inappropriate conduct.

Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Sandy Barbour accepted Chambers’ resignation on Wednesday. Chambers was set to enter his 10th season at the helm.

Penn State’s Affirmative Action and Athletics Integrity offices began conducting a review in July following a report by The Undefeated in which former guard Rasir Bolton recalled Chambers telling him ‘I need to get some of this pressure off you. I want to loosen that noose around your neck.’

The new allegation was previously unknown to Penn State and unrelated to The Undefeated article, Barbour told reporters during a brief media session on Wednesday evening that. She also stated that ‘NCAA matters were not part of of this.’

Barbour said she and Penn State President Eric Barron had received the internal investigation report in the last two weeks. Chambers delivered the news of his resignation late Wednesday afternoon.

“Today, I’m announcing my departure from Penn State,” Chambers said in a statement. “I am so proud of all our program has accomplished these past nine years, and I will be forever grateful to the Penn State community for its ongoing support.

“Anyone who has ever coached — especially at this level — knows the exceptional amount of energy and focus it takes to deliver each and every day. This has been an incredibly difficult year for me and my family, and we are in need of a break to reset and chart our path forward. So, I’m taking a step back to prepare myself for the next 20 years. And while I do, I’ll celebrate all we accomplished.’

According to a news release, assistant coach Jim Ferry was picked as the interim head coach for the 2020-21 season.
