‘Centre County Barns,’ a 48-page booklet issued by the Historic Barn and Farm Foundation of Pennsylvania as part of its recent tour of six county barns, is being placed in libraries and historical societies throughout the county.
In addition to detailed histories of six barns written by experts, the booklet contains an essay, ‘Centre County Barns in Their Agrarian Context,’ by Dr. Sally McMurry, professor emerita of history at Penn State. McMurry was also the keynote speaker at the group’s annual meeting, held the evening before the 100-mile tour that stretched from Oak Hall to Millheim and back.
The six barns toured by more than 60 people are Oak Hall Farm, Kuhns Tree Farm, Nittany Meadows, Rhoneymeade, the Hodge Farm and the Round Barn. The group also had a catered lunch at Grange Fairgrounds where its members were treated to an art demonstration by six members of Farmland Preservation Artists of Central Pennsylvania.
Barn and history experts create booklets for each year’s HBFF barn tour.
“They are a great resource for future generations,” said Patrick Donmoyer, president of the group and director of the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University.
Copies of the booklet can be purchased by contacting Donmoyer at donmoyer@kutztown.edu or (610) 683-1589.
